2026 Chess Olympiad: India Defends Throne, Uzbekistan Awaits Home Miracle

The official schedule of the 46th Chess Olympiad has been announced by FIDE, opening a dramatic tournament in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. The event takes place in September 2026, gathering hundreds of teams from around the world in two sections: Open and Women. India, the defending champion in both sections from the previous Olympiad, enters as the top favorite, but host Uzbekistan hopes to create a surprise thanks to home advantage and the rise of young grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov. The schedule follows the Swiss system over 11 rounds. Teams will play six consecutive rounds, then have a rest day before the final five rounds. The last round starts earlier at 11 AM local time instead of 3 PM to accommodate the closing ceremony. India fields its strongest lineup: in the Open section, four players above 2700 Elo – Gukesh (world champion), Arjun Erigaisi, R Praggnanandhaa (new India No.1), and Nihal Sarin, plus Vidit Gujrathi. The Women's team includes Humpy Koneru, Divya Deshmukh, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Vantika Agrawal, and Savitha Shri. Uzbekistan's home challenge is led by Sindarov, who will face Gukesh in the World Championship match later. The psychological pressure and packed schedule are key risks.
