Killaloe/ Ballina

Local History

Killaloe was the birth place of Brian Boru (940-1014AD), the greatest High King of Ireland. Killaloe was the capital of Ireland during his reign. He died whilst ending the Viking domination of Ireland in the battle of Clontarf in 1014.

The main feature of the town is St.Flannans Cathedral. The Cathedral was founded by Donal Mor O'Brien around 1185. The site has an interesting history, inside the Cathedral stands the Ogham Stone that bears the ancient Ogham script of the Celts and the Runic script of the Vikings.

Another important attraction is the bridge with thirteen arches that crosses the Shannon and joins Killaloe and Ballina. You can find more information on the history here.
